3. How does the United States contribute to the destruction of the rainforest (e.g., role of American trans- national corporations, demand in the United States for wood, beef, and other agricultural products, etc.)? What role should the United States play, if any, in addressing this issue? The US has lots of worldwide corporations and industries running in the undeveloped countries, where most of the forests that are getting destructed are located. The industries run on cheap and obtainable fossil fuels and therefore after clearing the forest for the land to build the factories, etc, use the wood to run the machinery. Overall, as one of the biggest consumers of energy, the US need all the resources to supply the factories with power and therefore mow down thousands of acres of forests every year.
The United States should be the opposite; as a global leader, they should be in charge of preventing the loss of forests and resources without the need of using so much in one time yet they are the one who are doing the most damage. That is why they are the world's largest CO2 producer. The US should be fixing what they have caused.
